Opt To Adopt - Give Our Children A Brighter Future

Thinking about adoption? Then come along to our information evening on Thursday 18th September, 6-8pm to find out more about adoption and how you could transform a child's life, as well as your own. Members of the Adoption team will be on hand to answer all your questions about adoption and talk about the reasons why children need adoption; the children who need loving families and the type of support that is available for you and your family.

There will be a short presentation at 6.30pm. Refreshments and creche facilities will be provided.

In Hackney, the majority of children waiting to be adopted are of Black and mixed parentage. We need adoptive families who can reflect and promote the ethnicity, culture and religion of these children and offer them stability and a loving home. We particularly need adoptive families for children with disabilities, siblings and older children (4-9 yrs) of white ethnicity and boys (1-7 yrs) of black and dual heritage.

You don't have to live in Hackney to adopt a Hackney child, we welcome applicants from all boroughs and neighbouring counties, as long as your home is secure. Whatever your age or marital status, you just need to have the love, space and time to share your life with a child.

For more information on adoption or to book your place at the open evening contact us on 0208 356 6320 or email adoption@hackney.gov.uk.

Become a Specialist Foster Carer for Hackney LIFE (Intensive Foster Care Programme)

We are recruiting foster carers for our specialist fostering programme. This programme is research based and focuses on helping young people, between the ages of 10 to 15 years old, create a new and stable life for themselves. The young people have significant emotional and behavioural needs, including challenging behaviour. Many of them will have had many previous foster placement breakdowns or will not have had the chance to live in a family environment, until now.

Applicants for this scheme will need to:

    Live in Hackney or neighbouring borough;
    Be two adult carers in a household, one of whom at least is able to be a full-time carer;
    Have a professional background or two years experience with providing direct services to young people

If you are interested in becoming a carer for this programme and would like to find out more then call us for an informal discussion on 020 8985 8578.

Plant Life: National Adoption Week 2003.

Tommy's photoIn November 2003 we held an event to raise awareness of the needs of Looked After Children in Hackney by planting 500 bulbs in London Fields on November the 4th as part of National Adoption Week 2003. Tommy Walsh, the "Ground Force" TV celebrity launched our Plant Life Event.

Each bulb planted represented one of the 500 children looked after by the London Borough of Hackney alone. We must ensure that these children will grow and thrive in life despite the often difficult and traumatic circumstances which brings them into care. We involved a local primary school so that our campaign drew as much attention as possible, and raised much needed awareness of children in need in our community.

Hackney pays tribute to Mrs Braithwaite and Mrs Best, two of Hackney's most cherished Foster Carers
We are always glad when an opportunity arises to show our appreciation for the hard work of some of our foster carers. On this occasion we had a double opportunity to do so. Mrs Best (pictured on the left) has just retired after 20 years as a foster carer. During this time her dedication and hard work has benefited so many HackneyKIDS. Mrs Braithwaite (pictured below right) has fostered children for 14 years for varying length of time, ranging from a week to, in one case, ten years. We will very much miss the great contribution they have both made to Hackney's fostering service
Mrs Best was a dedicated foster carer for over 20 years. She was fostering children and then took a particular interest in teenagers. It was Mrs Best's interest in older children that meant we could give appropriate foster placements for many young people.

We are always looking for placements for teenagers - giving young people room to find their feet and so become autonomous and valued members of the community. Many young people have also given a very big thank you to Mrs Best.

As she prepares to retire to Trinidad, Mrs Braithwaite has been awarded for her services to the borough of Hackney, but her modestly leads her to claim that her reward lies in seeing the unruly, insecure child who enters her home leave it self-assured and happy.

Hear it from the horse's mouth. Hackney foster carers Dave & Marian write about their experience.
