Preparation for Fostering.

From the time you make contact with us you will begin the process of being prepared for fostering.

Your first visit from a fostering social worker will, we hope, be the start of an on-going opportunity to learn about what becoming a foster carer involves. Initially you will need to know what fostering means in practical terms, how it is going to affect your life and what will be expected of you? Then you can consider how it might affect you emotionally, what areas might you find difficult to cope with and are there any problems that might be personally upsetting?

Discussing all these issues is a good introduction to the fostering task. However there is far more preparation than this that all applicants will receive. Training modules run regularly during the year for new applicants and recently approved applicants. People wanting to foster are encouraged to attend these training modules to learn more about working with social services. However we also recognise that for some people their religious, cultural or ethnic identity makes attending mixed groups difficult. We hope that we are sensitive to these issues. This will give you an opportunity to look at real examples of fostering situations and give you a chance to consider how you might respond to them. The training will also give you a lot of insight about the work of the social services and the importance of working together.
