Disabled Children.

Hackney is actively seeking more foster carers and adopters for disabled children. There are many types of disability, including learning difficulties, visual and hearing impairment, autism and physical disability.

Fostering or adopting a disabled child is often a deeply satisfying experience and meets an important need. It can be quite hard work, so foster carers of these children are paid more than for non-disabled children- exactly how much depends on the child and her or his disability. Adoption allowances are also more likely to be available.

It is often not necessary for carers of disabled children to have wheelchair access or any special adaptations to their home (although these things might come in very useful if needed).

A very high level of support from social services and other professionals is available, and interest and willingness to learn are as important as some existing knowledge about disabilities.

In addition to the types of fostering outlined in other Index areas, there is also a need for respite carers. They give the parents and their disabled children a much-needed break, perhaps for a weekend or midweek.

Many people are initially uncertain as to whether they could foster or adopt a disabled child. If you would like to discuss this further or would like more information about disabled children, please contact John Ramsey:
